As the middle of 5 kids, with us 3 in the middle very close in age, there wasn't a lot of alone time with either parent. That's one reason that I loved to go vote with my dad. We'd go up the block to our polling place at Sioux Falls College (now the University of Sioux Falls), and I'd get to shove the red lever across to begin and end. My father, a refugee and naturalized citizen, took voting seriously, so I did as a child, and and I take it very seriously now. If that's not enough, I think of Nelson Mandela voting for the first time and what it took to get to that point.
